Vũ Việt Hà: A Pioneer of Sustainable Fashion

Designer Vũ Việt Hà has gained recognition for his eco-conscious collections featuring natural materials. Recently, he launched a sustainable collection using pineapple fabric, showcased on international fashion stages.

Born and raised in Hanoi, Vũ Việt Hà built a strong foundation in fashion from the “College of Arts” and “University of Industrial Fine Arts.” His designs, such as Sóng Tơ (Silk Waves), Nước Đầu Nguồn (Headwaters), and the latest Bình Minh (Dawn), highlight his dedication to natural materials, including pineapple fabric.

Creating the Bình Minh collection required months of preparation. Approximately 480 pineapple leaves produce a 10-square-meter fabric sheet. The leaves are processed into fibers through multiple stages: pressing, washing, drying, and spinning. Vũ Việt Hà combines pineapple fiber with silk threads and dyes them manually to craft unique, sustainable textiles.

The collection reimagines the classic áo dài style from the 1930s, adding modern touches such as flared sleeves and intricate embroidery of birds and lotuses. Hand-cut details and traditional brocade elements complete these innovative designs.

A Broader Impact in Sustainable Fashion

Besides Vũ Việt Hà, other designers like La Phạm and KHAAR have incorporated pineapple fiber into their collections. In 2022, ECOSOI collaborated with La Phạm on the Invitation of Nature collection for the UN-DRESS fashion show, promoting sustainable materials to consumers worldwide.

Through Bình Minh and similar collections, audiences experience the beauty of Vietnam’s traditions infused with innovation, reinforcing a commitment to sustainable living. Pineapple fiber fashion, while unique, symbolizes a growing movement toward greener lifestyles and thoughtful consumption.
